William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse, Belle Isle, Detroit ~ September 2, 2021

The 58 foot tall lighthouse was designed by Albert Kahn and sculpted by Gaza Moroti in 1930. It's the only lighthouse in the U.S. to be constructed out of marble.  Since 1980, when thieves broke in and stole two of its four lamps, the light has been surrounded by a fence. The views must have been spectacular but there is no public access and no lighthouse office. To add to all of that, the grounds are poorly maintained. Nonetheless, it was worth the walk to get to it.
Besides being the only U.S. lighthouse constructed of marble, the light is also one of only two lighthouses built as a memorial in Michigan (the other being the Robert H Manning lighthouse near Empire). William Livingstone is mostly remembered for his contributions to shipping on the Great Lakes.
The fence is obviously not keeping away taggers.
The angle of these photos made the lighthouse look like a chimney.
I had to march through some tall grass and weeds to view the back of the lighthouse.
It was a short walk from there to see the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair.
Here's hoping for better days for this unique lighthouse.
