Shell Service Station, 1111 E. Sprague Street, Winston-Salem, North Carolina ~ May 16, 2026

Eight of these stations were built in 1930 and this is the only one that still exists. Quality Oil was a Winston-Salem marketer of Shell Oil and commissioned local contractors R.H. Burton and his Ralph to build them in the shape of a giant scallop shell.

The station eventually fell into disrepair but was restored in the 1990s by Preservation North Carolina. They had a small office inside until 2011, and the station is now privately owned. You can't get inside but can see through the windows/door. It's a quick stop, 10 minutes tops 😊

The station was placed on the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places in 1994.

Big Texas Steak Ranch, 7701 I-40, Amarillo, Texas ~ February 2025

Opened in 1960 on Route 66, the owner moved it to Interstate 40 in 1970 when I-40 opened bypassing Route 66. It's definitely a quirky roadside attraction.

Come to Amarillo for Cadillac Ranch and then enjoy a meal at the Big Texas Steak Ranch but for the love of all that is holy, don't eat a 72 ounce steak just because it will then be free 😊

Big Things, Small Town - Casey, Illinois ~ August, 2025

This town claims to have ten certified World's Largest attractions, along with lots of other big things 😊  We recently spent a few hours in Casey tracking them down.

These are a few of the other big things we found that are not the world's largest but are still fun.

Casey's list includes the World's Largest Wooden Gavel, which is about 20 minutes away in Marshall, Illinois.

The town made itself into a fine tourist attraction, if you're in the area. Good work, little town 😉
