Lansing, Michigan ~ Roadside Attractions and More

Lansing's most prominent building is the State Capitol, which opened January 1, 1879 and was designed by Elijah E. Myers. Myers modeled it after the U.S. Capitol.
This steam clock is 28 feet tall with a 49 bell carillon and was installed in 1997. Find it at 100 N. Grand Avenue.
"Sign Language" by Ben Graham is located at 325 City Market Drive.
"Elementary" aka the pencil sculpture is at 601 N. Washington Square and stands 25 feet tall.
A 22 foot tall sculpture by Rick Luke pays tribute to the blue collar history of Lansing. "The Worker" is located at the intersection of Cedar and Shiawasee Streets.
"The Portrait of a Dreamer" by Ivan Iler is fun to see and is also interactive; the crank can be turned to move the gears (336 E. Michigan Avenue).
While at the "Gearhead", the Lug Nut can be spotted. It's on top of a smokestack and is the world's largest lug nut, named after Lansing's minor league baseball team (South Cedar and Michigan Avenue).
Historic Markers are plentiful in Lansing and these are a few of them that we stopped to see.
The site of the first Capitol building was here at 201 S. Washington Square.
In Wentwork Park (North Grand Avenue), learn about the Old Newsboys and the Kerns Hotel Fire.
Michigan Vietnam Veterans Monument was erected in 2001 and remembers the 2651 people from Michigan who died in the war. It's a sad reminder of a tragic war. The memorial is located in front of the Hall of Justice (925 W. Ottawa St).
We found Kent County and the name of a family we know that lost a son and a brother.
On a lighter note, we couldn't get into this place on either of our two trips. Maybe next time 😊
But we did manage to enjoy the oldest bar in Lansing.
If you're in Lansing around lunch time, don't miss this place. Fidler's on the Grand was a great experience (4805 N. Grand River Drive). It's family owned and run and we had funny conversations with the owners and enjoyed some great home-made food.
Leave the gun, take the cannoli (because their baked goods are delicious!).
And that's our wrap from two visits to Lansing, Michigan!
