We visited for the first time on August 3, 2017, and it was a rainy day.
The raft was pulled across by one of the young passengers.
The spring is 200 feet across and 40 feet deep, and 10,000 gallons of fresh water rise from the fissures 40 feet below every minute. It's the largest freshwater spring in Michigan. and the water winds its way into Lange Bay on the northwest shore of Indian Lake.
On October 9, 2023 we visited again, and again it was raining 😕
Here's the water flowing towards Indian Lake.
This time there was a volunteer pulling the raft across the spring.
It's a short ride back and forth but it's a beautiful and unique place to visit.
Here's a photo from somewhere between 1900 & 1910.
Afterward, we stopped in at this establishment and had a great lunch.
Visit the Big Spring on your next trip to the U.P.!
