Mount Airy town claims to have inspired the town of Mayberry in the long-running TV show
"The Andy Griffith Show" and the later "Mayberry RFD" (1960-1968 and 1968-1971). However, the only real connection to the show is that Andy Griffith was born here and lived in the town until he finished high school. (The show was filmed in Hollywood.)

The town didn't start to embrace the Mayberry theme until the late 80s/early 90s. The first Mayberry Days festival took place in 1990. Tourists now flock to the town that never really was, since it re-invented itself. And it's fun. Tours can be taken in the cop cars if you wish. Be sure to grab some food at Snappy Lunch, mentioned by Andy Griffith on the show.
You will also find Floyd's barbershop.
Wally's Service Station.
The path to the courthouse.
A small museum devoted to Andy Griffith opened in 2009 with these statues outside of it.
